Gary Salmirs, a business owner and resident of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, is dedicated to helping people better their lives through exercise and nutrition.
Founder and CEO of the nonprofit Ironwill Foundation, Gary Salmirs and his team of devoted professionals help raise money for the research of diseases that lack adequate funding. He has collected large sums for the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit devoted to battling genetic diseases. Allison Moore, founder and President of the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, described Salmirs as “an amazing person who motivates everyone he knows to improve themselves and improve their community.”
Gary Salmirs started the nonprofit after his own bout with obesity, once overweight and leading an unhealthy lifestyle. It took hospitalization from a clot in a blood vessel to his liver to make Salmirs realize he had to take better care of himself. Following the outpouring of support he received, Gary Salmirs started the Ironwill Foundation in 2008 with a desire to help others.
Gary Salmirs considers his mission more important now than ever. Pointing to extremely high adult and child obesity rates nationwide, Salmirs is particularly concerned with the health of people in low-income communities.
Gary Salmirs knows that disadvantaged people typically lack the money for gym memberships and healthy food, with diets and wellness programs aimed at the middle class. That is why, in January 2010, he started the Ironwill Wellness Program, which seeks to help impoverished families learn how to cook healthier food on a budget. Along with other professionals who have backgrounds in health and nutrition, Gary Salmirs teaches cooking classes and answers health questions during the six-week course.
